Korean Universities Expand Global, Local Ties in Busy August for Campus Programs

SEOUL — From a memorandum of understanding with a theological college in Uganda to a joint startup event with a Singapore business school, Korean universities and education bodies opened August with a wave of partnership announcements, career programs and community initiatives, according to press releases distributed through Newswire.

Global partnerships

Chongshin University, led by President Park Sung-kyu, signed a memorandum of understanding with Uganda’s Reformed Theological College on Aug. 6 at the Ju Ki-chul Memorial Hall on its Sadang campus, according to a press release. The two institutions agreed to pursue cooperation on a Korean-language education center in Uganda.

Konkuk University’s KUVC and the Start-up Society of Singapore Management University co-hosted the “2026 KU-SMU Alliance,” a joint event reported on Aug. 7, the release said.

A separate release reported that Dulatkhan, an incoming student from Uzbekistan, has entered the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Faculty recruitment and career support

Konkuk University, headed by President Won Jong-pil, announced an open call for 36 tenure-track full-time faculty members across 35 academic fields at its Seoul campus, with appointments effective March 1, 2027, for the first semester of the 2027 academic year.

Tech University of Korea, led by President Hwang Soo-sung, wrapped up its “2026 TU Weekly Employment School,” run by the university’s job-plus center, the school announced. The program ran from June 1 through Aug. 6.

Community and youth programs

The Jungnang-gu Support Center for Out-of-School Youth, directed by Yoon Tae-hyun, held a completion ceremony in late July for “Kkumnarae,” its 2026 vocational competency program. According to the center, all six participating young people completed the five-month, 62-hour course and earned barista certifications.

In Seongbuk-gu, the Seongbuk Cultural Foundation signed a cooperation agreement on Aug. 1 with five universities — Korea University, Kookmin University, Dongduk Women’s University, Sungshin Women’s University and Hansung University — to expand reading culture in the district.

The Geumcheon Cultural Foundation, headed by CEO Seo Young-chul, will run its 2026 Wisdom School program, “A Philosophy Map Meeting the Present Time,” for adults at the Geumcheon-gu Geumnarae Library from Aug. 22 to Nov. 21.

In Cheonan, the city’s Urban Regeneration Support Center, the Bongmyeong Village Management Social Cooperative and Baekseok University’s anchor project team began operating a university student festival planning team with the cooperative on Aug. 5, according to a release.

Awards, research and institutions

The World Organization for the Suppression of Violence in Education and Home (SVEH) named 56 recipients of the ninth Korea Model Leader Award, including Kim Chan-mi, Oh Hye-won and Yoo Ju-won, in an announcement reported Aug. 7.

Also reported Aug. 7, Lee Hyun-soo, an undergraduate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University’s College of Engineering, has presented research on generative visual computing at conferences including NeurIPS, CVPR and ECCV.

The Korea Educational Facility Safety Agency, chaired by Huh Sung-woo, marked its 78th anniversary with a ceremony on the afternoon of Aug. 6 at the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall in Seoul’s Yongsan-gu, where it declared its management policy for 2027 before some 150 executives and staff.
