European Commission publishes practical guide for institutions hosting education hackathons
The Commission's education directorate has issued a DigiEduHack host guide covering how to plan, run and evaluate an education hackathon, aimed at institutions that want to host a challenge.
Institutions that want to run an education hackathon now have a step-by-step reference from the European Commission. The Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture posted the DigiEduHack host guide on 10 July 2026 through its European Education Area resources pages, according to the document’s publication details.
The guide is a practical document setting out information on drawing up a hackathon plan, organising and running the event, and evaluating the results, the directorate said. It is addressed specifically at organisations intending to host a DigiEduHack challenge.
DigiEduHack is run as a flagship initiative of the Commission’s Digital Education Action Plan, the directorate said, which places the host guide within a wider EU policy effort rather than treating it as a one-off event manual.
For education institutions outside Europe following the initiative, the guide is the operational counterpart to the annual call for hosts: rather than describing the competition itself, it addresses the logistics that determine whether a locally organised challenge produces usable outcomes.
